Egypt receives €1bn from EU as reward for economic reforms progress

Egypt and the European Union are strengthening their cooperation on development funding for 2026–2027 as Egypt’s economy starts to recover. Economic growth exceeded 5% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, driven by stronger performance in industry, technology, telecommunications, and tourism. Moreover, Egypt has received a €1 billion payment from the EU as part of a €5 billion macro-financial assistance program agreed in 2024, with further funding expected later in 2026 once agreed reforms are implemented. The payment follows economic reforms implemented by Egypt, including improvements in public financial management and the foreign exchange market. According to Egyptian officials, 109 reform measures have already been completed, and the funding has been described as a strong belief in Egypt’s structural reform program.
