Egypt becomes Germany’s top sweet potato supplier with US$20.8M in 2025 exports

Egypt has become Germany’s top supplier of sweet potatoes, exporting 16,100 tons worth over €18 million in 2025, marking a 72% increase from the previous year and the highest level recorded between the two countries. This growth follows 13 consecutive years of expansion, with exports increasing more than six times in the past five years. Egypt now holds a 23% share of the German market, rising from 5% in 2020, and has replaced major suppliers such as the United States, Spain, the Netherlands, and China. In October 2025 alone, Egypt exported 3,600 tons, which equals its total exports to Germany in 2021 and exceeds the full volume of 2020. This success is driven by lower prices, around 20-30% cheaper due to currency depreciation, as well as geographic proximity that reduces transport time and costs. In addition, Egyptian producers improved quality by adopting suitable varieties and obtaining certifications such as GLOBALG.A.P. and GRASP, meeting strict European standards. Strong cold chain infrastructure also supports product quality and allows re-export to Gulf markets. Egypt’s success also extends to other products, such as frozen strawberries, showing its ability to compete in European markets and meet high retail requirements.
